Mountain Film in Kenya

We did it! The first leg of our Kenyan MountainFilm for Students tour! I am excited to announce that Arjun Shah, a musician and philanthropist with Animal Activists Kenya, and I, supported by the MountainFilm Organisation and a dedicated group of volunteers, have embarked on a film tour targeting students in rural Kenya who are passionate about eco-cinema.

Our journey has been both emotional and largely rewarding as we strive to enhance understanding of environmental issues and civic responsibilities among students.

This is an ongoing project, and my roles include Director, Producer, and Camera Operator. We are working on a short documentary about this tour.

Rallying a War Cry

On June 25, 2024, thousands of Kenyans took to the streets in a nationwide protest against the controversial Finance Bill 2024. What began as a youth-led movement escalated into violent clashes between demonstrators and police in the capital Nairobi and other major cities.

This short provides an on-the-ground look at some of the dramatic events of that Tuesday. My roles included Director, Camera Operator, and Editor.

The film was exhibited at the Maandamano Art Exhibition 10th August by Pawa 254.

BWI - Building and Wood Worker's International

The BWI is a Global Union Federation that brings together free and democratic unions with members in the Building, Building Materials, Wood, Forestry, and Allied sectors. In my capacity as Director, Producer, Camera Operator, Editor, and Designer, I have had the opportunity to create documentary films and campaign materials for digital distribution as well as print media such as posters, flyers, and brochures.

German Caritas Association

At the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, I collaborated with a team to document its impact on the residents of Kibera, focusing on students attending a local vocational school. This project was commissioned by the German Caritas Association and involved working alongside Documentary Filmmaker Angela Mbogo and award-winning Photographer Thomas Obwire. In my capacity as Camera Operator, Cinematographer, and Production Manager, I played a pivotal role in capturing the narrative and essence of this important story.

The Secret Writer 6 - Eljay Elijah

30 artists from 20 countries across 6 continents united for The Secret Writer 6, Halloween edition, marking one of the largest global graffiti name exchanges to date. I had the honour of serving as the Director, Producer, Camera Operator, and Co-Editor for award-winning Kenyan graffiti artist Eljay Elijah, representing Kenya in this esteemed collaboration.

Frank Rodríguez, Melon Productions

One of the most exhilarating experiences in my film career thus far was collaborating with Spanish filmmakers Frank Rodríguez and Ida Gugus of Melon Productions. It was a challenging yet rewarding opportunity that allowed me to showcase my skills and expertise. In this project, I served as the Behind the Scenes Camera operator, Production Assistant, and Fixer. Additionally, I had the privilege of being interviewed as a female filmmaker, adding a unique perspective to the project.

Jackee Chang

When I embarked on my journey in the film industry, I had the fortune of meeting a seasoned traveler named Jackee Chang through the WorkAway program. Jackee quickly became not only a mentor but also a dear friend. During her stay in Kenya, I had the opportunity to work alongside her as a Behind the Scenes Camera Operator and Fixer. While I'm unable to share a direct link to the film due to its nature, but I've linked the image to a selection of pictures I captured during the project to provide a glimpse into our work together. I also invite you to explore Jackee's website to gain insight into our collaborative efforts.

Destreet

When I was just starting out in my career, I embarked on a trip to Uganda alongside photographer Claudia Greiner, where serendipity led us to encounter an extraordinary artist known as Destreet. This encounter marked the inception of my first documentary project, aptly titled 'Destreet' which I had the privilege of co-producing with Claudia. In this endeavor, I assumed the roles of Director, Producer, and Editor, shaping the narrative of Destreet's inspiring journey through the lens of my camera.

Clock's Men

My second documentary project presented a unique challenge as we encountered a setback with the sound recording, resulting in the partial realisation of my original vision. Nonetheless, the essence of the narrative remained intact, focusing on Jay Luthra and his family who have presided over their clock and watch sales and repair shop in Nairobi, Kenya since 1955. Witnessing the passage of time, they have observed the ebb and flow of presidents and the transformation of Nairobi into the bustling metropolis it is today, all while upholding a steadfast commitment to humility and grace. Timothy Morgan served as our sound engineer and interviewer, contributing to the storytelling process. In this project, I assumed the roles of Director, Producer, and Editor, navigating the challenges to capture the enduring spirit of the Luthra family's legacy.
